More About Barony
About Turning Wheel
Turning Wheel LLC was founded in 2013 by Sheridan Rathbun to create Barony.
Since then the project has benefited from many contributors, both to expand Barony, and work toward future projects. In 2022 the team went full-time. Prior to that, we worked evenings and weekends as a labor of love.
Team
Turning Wheel LLC is made up of 6 full-time developers:
Sheridan Rathbun, Josiah Colborn, Ben Potter,
Eric Studer, Dennis Price, Serge Lansiquot
The team works together remotely from Washington, Tennessee, Australia,
Georgia, and British Columbia.
Culture
Truly Independent
We don’t depend on any publisher or investor for funding. We do what we want, and nobody has leverage over us to compromise our creative goals and vision for our games, or how we choose to structure our studio. We run with a small team who thrives when wearing a bunch of hats.
Structured by Passion
We have no formal pecking order. We operate in an informal, results-driven work environment. Role in the team is defined by what we choose to do, not an org chart. We have a couple regular meetings to share progress, highlight problems, and collaborate, but otherwise work entirely asynchronous contact through Slack. We don’t micromanage work schedules. We trust our team to take the time they need to have balance in their life, while satisfying their work commitments.
Scrappy
We don’t have the resources or formal structures of a big faceless company, nor do we wish to be bogged down by a bunch of bloated processes. Expect to figure things out on the go, and sometimes in unorthodox ways. This doesn’t mean we work without a plan, but it does mean we spend more time working than talking about working.
Building on Common Ground
We take for granted that each team member is an individual with unique perspectives and values, and we might disagree on a lot of things. We respect each others’ work, and believe strongly in building consensus where it matters. Spirited debate is constructive when it stands to improve the game, and not advance egos.
As a team, we choose to focus on the things that we share in common:
Love of games, making them, and getting better at it.
